The Western Area Basketball Association yearly competition commenced on Saturday 30 March 2019. The competition officially kicks started with Dock Cannol Exclavates playing Dukuray Warriors and on Sunday 31 March 2019, Archibald Red Flames played against Canon Royals,
The Secretary General of the Association, Issa B. Fofana, said the tournament will be played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; and each club has at least one week in which they will be sedentary. The organizers said the playoffs will have three rounds, the wildcard round, the semi-finals and the finals.
“We have nine (9) clubs that will participate in this year’s tournament and it is a round robin format. In a revised system, six teams will make the playoffs and this is done in order to boost the competitive nature of the tournament,” he said.
Mr. Fofana further said that six top teams will qualify in the playoffs, based on wins and in a situation where three or more teams are tied at the end of the competition, point differences will be used.
The top two teams from the regular season round robin will qualify automatically for the playoffs whilst the teams finishing between third and sixth will make the first round of the playoffs, which is the wildcard round.
In the wildcard round, third will play sixth whilst fourth will play fifth; this will be a one game knockout and the winners of the third versus sixth matchup will advance to the semifinals to play the second placed regular season team whilst the winner of the fourth versus fifth will meet the first placed regular season team. The semi-finals will be a best of three game series in which the first team to win will move on to the finals.
The finals will be a best of five games series with the first to three winners crowned champions.
