As the momentum of the Sierra Leone Premier League continues to gain up, the Chairman of the Premier League Board, Lawyer Emmanuel Saffa Abdulia has assured the nation of a peaceful and sustainable Premier League Tournament in the country.
Speaking to Pressmen at the Ministry of Information and Communications Office, Youyi Building in Freetown, on Thursday, 21st February 2019, Chairman Saffa Abdulai said that the competition has provided employment for Seven Hundred and Forty-Five people in the country, including players and officials of the entire league.
He said that due to the recent ‘unsportsmanlike’ and violent behavior between fans of Diamond Stars Football Club and FC Kallon on the 16th February, 2019 at the Koidu playing field and the alleged riotous conduct by the executive and players of the Ports Authority FC after their match against Mighty Blackpool on Wednesday 20th February 2019 at the Siaka Stevens Stadium, the Sierra Leone Premier League Board has resolved to impose a Fine of Ten Million Leones (10,000,000) on the Management of Diamond Stars FC for failing to provide adequate security during their encounter with the Kamboi Eagles FC , adding that they have also imposed a Fine of Five Million Leones (Le 5,000,000) on the Management of Kamboi Eagles FC for the aforesaid fracas.
Chairman Saffa Abdulai said that the Premier League has attracted thousands of sports loving Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad and football ‘scouters’ who are looking for young and prolific players.
He conformed to the press that the 13 Premier League clubs have received Fifty Million Leones each for the first phase of the season, and added that much is expected of the management in exhibiting fantastic performance within the entire premier.
He also expressed his total dismay over non compliance by certain host teams to submit proceeds of matches played.
“We will consider their return tickets as all sold and will definitely deduct it from the second tranche payment of their seed money as we are expecting much from the clubs” he affirmed.
Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai further said that the first session of the premier league season will end on Match 31st 2019 and that there will be a two-week break. He said that the league will resume in the third week of April, adding that all teams should abide by the rules and regulations of the league.
In his conclusion, the League Board Chairman said that the Premier League has generated Forty Million Leones (Le 40,000,000) for the Western Area Football Association (WAFA) in this year’s premier league, and that they have made a huge landmark in football, adding that they are calling on all Sierra Leoneans to support the vision of the government, and that the New Direction is ready to support sport in the country.
