Police sources have intimated NewsWatch Newspaper that three Chinese and two Ghanaians have been arrested with millions of dollars worth of equipment used to perpetuate SIM box fraud.
The arrest took place on Saturday 17th November, in an apartment at Riverside Drive in Freetown, where the criminal gang has been operating from.
According to Police sources, millions of SIM cards belonging to the two leading mobile phone companies, Africell and Orange were found at the scene.
“Of the millions of SIM cards seized by the police, 99.5% are Africell SIM cards and the rest belong to Orange,” our source revealed, adding that over ten 50kg empty rice bags were used to transport the illegal SIM cards to the CID headquarters.
We were also informed that the ringleader of the SIM card or SIM box fraud is a certain Mike who drives a Range Rover 2017 model with a Ghanaian registration plate in Sierra Leone.
The National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) officials who participated in the raid confirmed that it was a master SIM card operation which was used by the operators to bypass the main global international calls transfer system in order to siphon monies meant for the state into their pockets, thereby depriving the mobile phone companies and the country of millions of dollars.
